Julia Adams is living proof of what happens when resilience meets opportunity.
We met Julia through our community animal outreach program. She came to us asking for help—not for herself, but for a Charlie’s Change rescue dog in her care. That small act of kindness turned into a powerful connection.
Recently she fell victim to a devastating scam when a R10,000 deposit—intended to secure her a safe place to stay—was stolen. It was a major blow, but she hasn’t let it stop her.
Over time, we got to know her story. Julia lives in a Cape Town township with her father, who suffered a stroke and is now unable to work. Despite major challenges at home, Julia remained committed to her dream of becoming a professional chef.
In 2024, she was accepted into the COOKTASTIC! chef training programme—a life-changing opportunity. She began her studies with nothing but grit, talent, and a dream. Every day she travelled four hours to class and back, often leaving home before sunrise and getting home after dark.
She never complained.
Fast forward to today: Julia is now completing her in-service hospitality training at the Westin Cape Town, one of the city’s top international hotels. She’s worked in multiple kitchens, picked up new skills, and continues to impress with her determination and work ethic.
